I have been approached be a researcher that would like to stay anonymous. Here is what they need. I know this person and trust them

Greetings,

I am writing to request your assistance with a study on the collateral consequences of community notification, or Megan’s Law. This is a very important study and will contribute to our knowledge about the consequences of being on the registry to both the RSO and his/her family members. I plan to use the results to inform the public, national organizations with inherent interest in preventing sexual assault/abuse, and law makers.

I would like to request permission to distribute the link to the survey to members of your organization. To do this, I would need either a distribution list or the individual emails of your members. Alternatively, if this is not possible, I would request that you send the survey link to your members. The survey will be designed to be completely anonymous and confidential without the ability of me or my research team to verify the identity of those who complete the survey.

I anticipate beginning this study in May 2008, after receiving approval from the Human Subjects Review Board.

Thank you for your consideration.

I’m not comfortable giving anbody (even if you know them) any kind of email list of our folks. Posting a link would be fine, I think.

We could tell her we will post the link on our forum. This way, she gets as many responses as possible from us without violating our promise to members not to give out their info. Or- as Linda was saying in the teleconference, she could contact each member individually, but it seems to me the easiest thing is just to post it and tell our members that when responding, let the researcher know where they heard about the project. The problem with posting the link is that if we have any trolls here they will definitely be responding (meaning everything from skewing the results to outright harrassment of the researcher), while some, if not most, of our members possibly will not. So maybe it would be better to contact members individually- although it seems like thats a real pain for whoever has to do it. I don’t know- I’ll leave it to the more decisive staff to figure this one out, I guess.

I Like this method better.

This way we could make an announcement and approve only those we know and trust. Security remains intact.

Like it. Post the info about the survey and have members PM to get the survey link. Tell EVERYBODY (especially Z?) not to post it anywhere else!!!

I know it’s a silly thought, but if the researcher wants a lot of response, go ahead and let Z post it and whoever else wants to as well. Then when the researcher gets harrassed unmercifully by AZ, he/she will quickly become an ally and have no doubt about what the SO issue is really about… I’m just kidding (well, half-way kidding anyway… ).
