A hard question: Think quickly and carefully

I just had a conversation with Al that really worries me. He is very depressed, as we all know, lots of hard things have been going on in his life lately.
He is also depressed about some things from the forum.
AS you all know, he has desired to be a staff member and/or to be allowed to listen to our staff teleconference.
I have no idea if it will make a real difference to him at this point or not but I thought I would put this to you.
He is going to be taking a break from SOSEN, he said maybe short, maybe long, maybe forever.
He is talking about taking that PERMANENT break from life itself. Not a threat, but just considering it.
I know Al is hard to deal with, harder at some times than others.
How about if we let him listen to our staff Teleconferences?
I know, I know, this may not work out, probably won’t work out, but he is a human being and I just hate not to do something this simple that could (not to be dramatic) save someones life.
Let me know your true feelings ASAP.

We are here for support. If he needs support, we should be the first in line to offer it. At this point, I’m not comfortable with him being a staff-member, but listening in on teleconferences probably wouldn’t hurt anything. I’m no fan of his devisiveness, but he does often have good ideas and/or advice. If we do this, he has to agree that at the first sign of devisiveness, or lack of discretion about what is discussed will immediately result in him being on the “no-call” list. Perhaps impressing on him that this is somewhat unprecedented would help him to see that we take what we do here seriously, and that we can’t afford to waste time meeting his every demand. It could actually help him to be more consistent, mood-wise. Besides, we can always put a stop to it if any trouble starts- and he needs to be aware of this. It may help keep him on his “best behavior”…

I’m fine with it, if everyone else is… He’s a good member, just a pain sometimes. He in no way deserves our indifference.

I have already given my decision by phone. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have Al in staff.

He can create his own projects and report the progress to us in select staff meetings, i.e. every 3 weeks or so. Al is NOT staff material.

I sicked Linda on Al and I think she helped his state of mind.
Hey who better to tell you that better things are on the horizon than someone who recently got evicted from a SLAVE SHACK that had no heat, and ended up in a 4 bedroom house in Ohio with a job, and OFF THE REGISTRY;
Just when things look the bleakest, wonderful things CAN and often DO happen.

I do think I soothed the savage Al. We talked twice today and we were even laughing on the phone together. Don’t get me wrong it was a very serious conversation. He has a Dr appointment next week for a med check. I reminded him sometimes an anti depressant can have the oposite effect. That the dr might have to try different ones to get it right. He will still be reading the forum just not posting for a while

This is sad to hear, I was missing seeing Al around the forums. He’s valuable part of the committee groups and his input is always appreciated, perhaps we could give him a special position in there, as opposed to making him an “official” staff member?

Linda, if you call him again, could you please pass on my thoughts to him.

I don’t think he’s gone yet….that’s not his style. BUT….all of us need to be careful of GIVING HIM A POSITION. I know this first hand as I made that mistake. It’s the one that separated me from him for good. I will never do it again.

Al likes to think up projects for himself. As long as it does not hurt our agenda as a national advocacy group…..Al has free rain to do whatever he wants himself. He can tell us about was he is doing at select meetings and then sign off after so we can get along with business.
